Fernbrook Elementary School scholars learn about family traditions and culture

Boua Xiong, a second grade teacher at Fernbrook Elementary School, recently organized a project allowing scholars to learn about family traditions and culture. Students then presented their projects to staff members and had their work on display in the media center.

Students in Xiong’s class learned about different ways of living, including the Hmong culture. Students used sequence of events words, from their reading unit, to explain their family holiday traditions. They then created Paj Ntaub (story cloths) to tell their family holiday traditions.

“We shared our family holiday traditions through Hmong art, trying our best to color our Paj Ntaub as if they were threaded by needle,” Xiong said. “Our mini Hmong unit also gave us the opportunity to learn some Hmong. Students illustrated family portraits that included labels of Hmong words they learned to say, read, and write.”

The students’ projects were displayed in the media center for their classmates to see. The display included dolls with Hmong clothes, books, traditional Hmong clothes, and more.

“This is also a great way for us to welcome back our Fernbrook teachers and students with the new year, Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab (Happy New Year)!” Xiong said.
